Published July 7, 2026 · 15 min read
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is the standardised test for admission to business schools worldwide. If you are applying for an MBA or other graduate business programme, a strong GMAT score can significantly strengthen your application. This guide covers everything you need to score 700 or higher.
GMAT Focus Edition Format
The GMAT Focus Edition has three sections: Quantitative Reasoning (21 questions, 45 minutes), Verbal Reasoning (23 questions, 45 minutes), and Data Insights (20 questions, 45 minutes). Each section is scored 60-90. Total score ranges from 205-805. Total test time is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Scoring
Top business schools typically look for scores of 700+. Harvard Business School's average is approximately 730. Stanford GSB's average is approximately 738. A score of 650+ is competitive for many good programmes.
Preparation Strategies
Quantitative Reasoning
Review arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and word problems. The GMAT focuses on problem-solving and data sufficiency — a unique question type that tests your logical reasoning. Practise both extensively.
Verbal Reasoning
Focus on critical reasoning, reading comprehension, and sentence editing. For critical reasoning, learn to identify assumptions, strengthen and weaken arguments, and evaluate evidence.
Data Insights
This section tests your ability to analyse and interpret data from multiple sources. Practise with multi-source reasoning, table analysis, and graphics interpretation questions.
