SAT Guide: Complete Preparation for a Top Score

Published July 7, 2026 · 15 min read

The SAT is a standardised test widely used for college admissions in the United States. The digital SAT is shorter, adaptive, and faster to score than the previous paper version. This guide covers everything you need to prepare effectively and achieve a competitive score.

Digital SAT Format

The digital SAT has two main sections: Reading and Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes). Each section is scored 200-800, for a total of 400-1600. The test is adaptive — your performance on the first module determines the difficulty of the second module. Total time is approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes.

Scoring

A score of 1400+ is competitive for top universities. The average SAT score is approximately 1050. Ivy League universities typically expect 1500+. Many universities are now test-optional, but a strong SAT score can still strengthen your application.

Preparation Strategies

Reading and Writing

Read widely — academic articles, literature, historical documents, and scientific texts. Practise identifying main ideas, making inferences, and understanding vocabulary in context. For writing, focus on grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Math

Review algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. The digital SAT allows a calculator for all math questions. Practise with the built-in desmos calculator.
