- Level: Postdoctoral / University Lecturer
- Funding: Fully Funded
Fellowship • Austria
The Franz Werfel Fellowship, administered by Austria's OeAD (Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalisation), supports young university teachers of German language and Austrian literature from outside Austria who wish to deepen their research and teaching in this field. The fellowship funds a 4-9 month research and networking stay in Austria, during which fellows work at host university departments, access archives and libraries, and build connections with the Austrian Germanist community. Beyond the research period, the programme includes follow-up financial and material support designed to sustain the fellow's teaching and scholarly output after returning home. The fellowship is open to non-Austrian academics already working in higher education who specialise in German-language literature with a connection to Austrian writers and literary history. Two annual deadlines exist for this cycle: 1 March and 15 September. Applications are submitted through Austria's national grants database, grants.at, which centralises all OeAD-administered international scholarship and research programmes. This is a comparatively low-competition, high-value opportunity for specialists in German Studies, since it targets a narrow and clearly defined academic community rather than competing against the broader pool of generalist scholarship applicants. Selected fellows join a global network of Austrian Studies academics and gain firsthand access to Austrian literary archives unavailable elsewhere.
