The Richard Plaschka Fellowship is an OeAD-administered programme for young university teachers of historical sciences whose research focuses on Austrian history. Fellows spend between 4 and 18 months in Austria working as visiting researchers, with access to university departments, archives, and libraries to support original historical research. As with other OeAD fellowships in this family, the award includes structured follow-up measures, both financial and material, to help the fellow continue developing their research and teaching capacity once they return to their home country. This fellowship is well-suited to historians, particularly those teaching at universities outside Austria, who want to build deep, primary-source-based expertise in topics connected to Austrian political, social, or cultural history. Two application deadlines run each year, 1 March and 15 September, with applications submitted via Austria's comprehensive funding portal at grants.at. Because the fellowship targets a specific academic specialism, applicant pools tend to be smaller than for broad disciplinary scholarships, giving well-matched candidates a meaningful chance of selection. Fellows benefit from Vienna's extensive historical archives, including the Austrian State Archives and university libraries holding centuries of source material, making this fellowship particularly valuable for doctoral-level historians building a long-term research agenda centred on Central Europe.
