The Marshall Scholarship is a flagship UK government award funding up to 50 outstanding young Americans each year to pursue graduate study at any UK university, in any academic field. Created in 1953 by Act of the British Parliament as a gesture of gratitude for the Marshall Plan, the scholarship covers university and college fees, a living stipend, and travel costs for one to three years of study, depending on the chosen pathway: a single one-year Master's, two consecutive Master's degrees, a two-year Master's, or up to three years of doctoral study. Scholars also receive visa support and become part of a respected transatlantic network of Marshall alumni working across government, academia, science, and the arts. Eligibility is restricted to US citizens who hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year US college or university with a GPA of at least 3.7, who graduated after April 2024, and who have not previously studied for a UK degree or sat UK school examinations such as A-Levels or GCSEs. Selection prioritises not just academic excellence but leadership potential and ambassadorial qualities, reflecting the scholarship's diplomatic origins. Candidates apply through their undergraduate institution's endorsement process; applicants and recommenders must submit materials by 29 September 2026 at 5:00 PM in the endorsing institution's time zone, with the institution then completing its endorsement and submission by 1 October 2026. This is one of the most prestigious postgraduate funding routes available to American students seeking to study anywhere in the UK.
